Aquaculture sector accounts for about 20% of fish production in Europe and directly employs some 70,000 people. [Aquaculture is a significant activity in many Member States, producing around 1.3 million tonnes in volume. The top 3 species in aquaculture in the European Union (EU) in 2017 in terms of volume were the Mediterranean mussel, the Atlantic salmon and the Rainbow trout. A map of aquaculture production by species is now available.
The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is a network of organisations supported by the EU’s integrated maritime policy. These organisations work together to observe the sea, process the data according to international standards and make that information freely available as interoperable data layers and data products.
